About Cat's Claw
Cat's Claw climbs up to about 30 meters into the forest canopy, hooking itself on with its curved thorns. The Asháninka people of the Peruvian Amazon, who call it Savéntaro, have the longest recorded tradition of boiling slices of the bark into a bitter tea. A vine takes eight years or more to reach harvest size, and when it is cut above the ground rather than pulled up, it grows back.
The bark contains naturally occurring plant compounds called oxindole alkaloids, along with quinovic acid glycosides and proanthocyanidins. Cat's Claw is not Devil's Claw, a different plant from southern Africa. More in our Cat's Claw herb guide.
Cat's Claw Capsules FAQ
Can't find your answer? Contact us.
How many Cat's Claw capsules should I take a day?
Adults: 2 capsules, twice a day, starting with 1 capsule. That is 4 capsules, or 2 g of inner vine bark, a day, so a bottle of 100 lasts 25 days.
Is Cat's Claw the same as Devil's Claw?
No. Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is an Amazonian vine; Devil's Claw is an unrelated plant from southern Africa.
Which part of Cat's Claw is in the capsules?
The inner bark of the vine, the part traditionally boiled into tea in the Peruvian Amazon.
Can I take Cat's Claw with medication?
If you take blood thinners, blood-pressure medication, immunosuppressants, protease inhibitors or any other prescription medication, talk to your practitioner first.
