About Pau d'Arco
Pau d'Arco is a tall tree of Central and South America that can reach 30 meters, famous for the clouds of pink and purple flowers it bears on bare branches in the southern winter. Its Portuguese name means "bow stick", because indigenous hunters made bows from its hard wood. In Brazil it is Ipê Roxo, the purple ipê, and in Argentina and Paraguay Lapacho; in 2012 Paraguay made the Lapacho trees, Pau d'Arco among them, its national tree.
Across South America the inner bark has long been simmered into a strong tea, and in the herb trade it is sold as Taheebo. The inner bark contains naturally occurring naphthoquinones, among them lapachol and beta-lapachone, along with anthraquinones and flavonoids.
