Pau d'Arco Extract: Lapacho bark as a tincture, for healthy immune function*
Pau d'Arco Extract is for adults who would like to support healthy immune function* through the bark of the Lapacho tree, taken as drops instead of brewed as a tea. Pau d'Arco (Tabebuia impetiginosa), the Lapacho of Argentina and Paraguay and the Ipê Roxo of Brazil, is a tall tree whose inner bark, sold as Taheebo, has been part of South American tradition for centuries. Our extract is made from the bark, wild-harvested at peak potency, in distilled water and sugar cane alcohol (40%). A serving is 25 drops (0.8 ml), so the amount is simple to adjust, and this is the 2 fl oz (60 ml) bottle.
- 2 fl oz60 ml bottle of liquid extract
- 25 drops0.8 ml per serving
- 40%Sugar cane alcohol, with distilled water

About Pau d'Arco
In the southern winter, roughly June to September, Pau d'Arco drops its leaves and then flowers, so it blooms pink and purple on bare branches. Brazilians name their ipê trees by flower color, and this one is the purple ipê, ipê-roxo; ipê itself comes from the Tupi for "thick-barked tree". Its Portuguese name, Pau d'Arco, means "bow stick", after the hard wood that indigenous hunters made into bows. It grows from Mexico to northern Argentina, in rainforest and in the drier forests and savannas of central Brazil.
Its botanical name has changed with science: for most of the twentieth century it was a Tabebuia, in 1970 it was moved to Handroanthus, and DNA studies confirmed the change in 2007. Through it all, South Americans kept one use, the inner bark simmered in water into a strong tea, a decoction. Our extract is made from the bark in distilled water and sugar cane alcohol (40%), with no brewing, and the herb trade, like our listing, still calls it Tabebuia impetiginosa. Pau d'Arco's inner bark holds naturally occurring naphthoquinones, notably lapachol and beta-lapachone, with anthraquinones, flavonoids, iridoids and lignans. More in our Pau d'Arco herb guide.
