About Huacapu
Huacapu is a canopy tree of the Amazon and the wet lowland forests of Central America, native from Nicaragua and Costa Rica to Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and the Guianas. Its wood is famous: so heavy and so resistant to rot and termites that posts of it have stood 30 to 40 years in the ground with no sign of decay, and in the Peruvian Amazon it is the favorite timber for house posts and poles.
The same tree gives a bark with a long place in Amazonian folk tradition. In the Peruvian Amazon the bark is traditionally left to steep in cane spirit, sweetened with wild honey, and sipped as a tonic. The tree is also the source of minquartynoic acid, a rare fatty acid named after it. More in our Huacapu herb guide.
