About Huanarpo Macho
Huanarpo Macho is a plant of the seasonally dry tropics, a shrub rather than a rainforest tree. It grows to about 5 to 6.5 feet (1.5 to 2 meters) on fleshy, spreading branches, on the dry western side of Peru from the coast up into the Andean highlands, and just across the border in southwestern Ecuador; of roughly 100 records of the plant in GBIF, the global biodiversity database, 91 come from Peru. In the dry season its leaves turn brown early, and its orange-red flowers gather in scarlet, head-like clusters.
The part that matters is the young stem. Peruvian tradition turns it into a tincture or an infusion steeped in water, and our extract follows the first path: wild-harvested young stem in distilled water and sugar cane alcohol (40%), taken in drops. Its stems contain naturally occurring catechins, flavan-3-ols of the same chemical group as the catechins of tea. The plant belongs to the spurge family, with cassava, the rubber tree and the poinsettia, and the botanist who named it in 1865, Johannes Müller Argoviensis, named Sangre de Grado the following year.
