About Anamu
Anamu is a perennial herb, usually 30 centimeters to 1.5 meters tall, with glossy oval leaves and slender spikes of tiny white flowers. Crush a leaf and it smells strongly of garlic, which is what its Latin name, alliacea, means; cattle that graze on it give milk that tastes of garlic. Carl Linnaeus named it in 1753 for James Petiver, a London apothecary and plant collector.
Its garlic smell comes from naturally occurring sulfur compounds, such as dibenzyl trisulfide. It also contains coumarins, flavonoids and triterpenes. More in our Anamu herb guide.
