About Clavo Huasca
Clavo Huasca is a liana, a woody vine that roots in the forest floor and climbs up through the trees of the Amazon's wet forests, from southern Colombia through Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia and northern Brazil. Its name is a plain description: clavo is Spanish for clove, and huasca comes from the Quechua word for rope. Cut one of its stems across and you may see a cross-shaped pattern in the wood, a trait of the climbing vines in its tribe.
Its wood and leaves smell of cloves because they contain eugenol, the same aromatic compound that gives cloves their scent; the two plants are not related. Its bark contains naturally occurring phenolic compounds, including phenylpropanoid glycosides such as verbascoside.
