About Matico
Matico is a shrub or small tree of the pepper family, native from Mexico and the Caribbean through Central America to Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and northern Argentina. It belongs to the same genus as black pepper and kava, and like them it carries its tiny flowers packed along slender spikes. By the late 1800s its aromatic leaves, from Peru, were described in American herbal reference books.
Early American herbal texts described Matico as an aromatic bitter, and its fruits are used as a peppery spice.
