About Clavo Huasca
Clavo means both "nail" and "clove" in Spanish, the spice having been named for its nail-like shape (Latin clavus), while huasca comes from the Quechua waskha, "rope". Rooted in the ground, the vine climbs through the trees of wet Amazonian forest, in southern Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, northeastern Bolivia and northern Brazil. It belongs to Tynanthus, a small genus of American lianas, from southern Mexico to southern Brazil, that botanists recognize partly by its clove scent; in Brazil these vines are called cipó-cravo, "clove vine".
Our extract is made from the vine bark, wild-harvested and extracted in distilled water and sugar cane alcohol (40%); our capsules use the vine wood. Locally the plant is also brewed as a tea and used as a spice. The clove scent comes from eugenol, a major component of clove oil, which occurs in the essential oil of the wood and leaves. The bark holds naturally occurring phenylpropanoid glycosides such as verbascoside, isoverbascoside and leucosceptoside, and a eugenol-based glycoside that was new to science.
