About Chuchuhuasi
Chuchuhuasi is a tall tree of the wet lowland rainforest of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela and northern Brazil, growing to about 100 feet (30 m). The name is shared by several closely related trees. Our label names Maytenus krukovii, which Kew counts as the same species as Maytenus macrocarpa, first described from Peru by the Spanish botanists Ruiz and Pavón in 1802.
In the Peruvian Amazon the bark is simmered into a decoction or, most often, shredded and steeped in local sugarcane rum as a strengthening tonic. It contains naturally occurring triterpenes, among them friedelin and lupeol. More in our Chuchuhuasi herb guide.
