Our extract is the bark, wild-harvested at peak potency and extracted in distilled water and sugar cane alcohol (40%). A serving is 30 drops (1 ml), and this is the 2 fl oz (60 ml) bottle.

About Simarouba

Bitterwood is a fair name. Simarouba bark has no smell at all, but a strongly bitter taste, and like most of its relatives in the quassia family, which also includes the tree of heaven, Ailanthus, the tree is bitter-barked. The tree grows to 35 metres in wet tropical forest, and its range runs from Mexico and the Caribbean islands south to the Guianas and the Amazon. Birds and monkeys eat its small, fleshy fruits and carry the seeds through the forest.

The bark reached France from Guiana as early as 1713, and two centuries later British and American pharmacy books still listed it, speaking of a "bitter principle" in the bark. Chemists have since named the compounds behind it: naturally occurring quassinoids such as glaucarubinone. Our extract is the wild-harvested bark in distilled water and sugar cane alcohol (40%), measured in drops rather than brewed. More in our Simarouba herb guide.
