About Bellaco Caspi
A tree of lowland tropical forest, Bellaco Caspi ranges from Panama through Colombia, Venezuela and the Guianas to Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil, where it reaches into the Cerrado. It rises on a straight trunk 30 to 40 centimeters across to a narrow, pyramid-shaped crown. In the Central Amazon it is found both on high ground that never floods and in forest that stands under water for months each year, and in flooding trials, seedlings from floodplain trees survived four months completely under water.
Botanists first published it in 1860, in Flora Brasiliensis, as a frangipani, Plumeria sucuuba, under a name of Richard Spruce's, and moved it to Himatanthus in the 1930s; frangipani, oleander and periwinkle are all its relatives in the dogbane family. In Brazil it is Sucuuba, or Janaguba in the northeast, and its wood is made into boxes, tool handles and toys. Our extract is the bark and resin in distilled water and sugar cane alcohol (40%).
