Suma is the root of a scrambling shrub of South America's seasonally dry tropics, which grows across much of Brazil and into Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru and northeastern Argentina. In Brazil it is called Para Tudo, "for everything", for its place in folk tradition as an all-round tonic, and Brazilian herbal books list it among the country's native plants with an adaptogen-like reputation. It belongs to the amaranth family, alongside quinoa and beets.
The herb trade knows it as Pfaffia paniculata, the name on our label; in 2000 botanists placed it in the genus Hebanthe, as Hebanthe erianthos. Suma root contains naturally occurring ecdysteroids, including 20-hydroxyecdysone (beta-ecdysone), saponins called pfaffosides, and plant sterols such as beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol.
